Wiikwemkoong approved a redundant backup data centre at Point Grondine Park. Led by CTO Michael McCormick, this project expands the community's IT modernization, ensuring disaster recovery and data sovereignty.

Approves new back-up data centre for Point Grondine

WIIKWEMKOONG—Michael McCormick is on a mission. The hard-charging former Marine and current Chief Technology Officer for Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, Mr. McCormick is responsible for future-proofing the Territory’s computing infrastructure while providing secure and reliable IT services to more than 500 band employees and the wider community.

It all started back in 2022, when the Wiikwemkoong band office was hit with a devastating flood that damaged computer servers and the cabling underpinning critical IT infrastructure.

“We were down for four days,” recalls Wiikwemkoong Chief Executive Officer Shelley Trudeau. “That was totally unacceptable, so we decided to bring in a dedicated person that could help modernize our IT infrastructure and develop local expertise to make us self-sufficient.”
