First wildland fire reported on Manitoulin is extinguished

SOUTH BAY—On Sunday, August 2 the Ministry of Natural resources Aviation Forest Fire and Emergency Services Northeast Region reported two new wildland fires in the region, one of which was located on Manitoulin Island.

Sudbury 45 was 0.1 hectares and located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron at South Bay, Wiikwemkoong. The fire was extinguished the same day.

Fire Information Office Sydney Morgan-Gervais told The Expositor that the fire was reported by an individual in the community. He also shared that since the wildland fire season began (April 1) this is the first fire for Manitoulin Island.

In the Northeast Region, as of Sunday, August 2 there were 45 active wildland fires. Of those fires two are not in control, two are being held, seven are under control and 34 are being observed.
