He is survived by his high school sweetheart Patricia, his wife of 67 years and children Bob, Carol (Tom), Brian (Marilyn) and Sharon (Michael). His 10 cherished grandchildren, Brandon (Vicki), Logan (Ana), Cory (Allie), Breannah (Adam), Ashlee (Ben), Zack (Amber), Travis (Taylor) Evan, Lee, Kyle (Alyssa). Beloved by his 16 great grandchildren Elliott, Rosalie, Ken, Kylah, Zane, Raylin, Levi, Jaxon, Olivia, Lena, Vayda, Jack, Liam, Joshua, Brady, and Charlotte. He will be missed by his sister Marjorie (Roger) and brother Max (Linda) and his sister-in-law Vicky. Predeceased by sister-in-law Bev and husband Ken. He will also be missed by nieces Julie and Nancy and nephews Aaron and Ted, cousins, friends and neighbours. He began his career in the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 18, once serving as an aircraft mechanic on board the HMCS Bonaventure. Stories of his time in the Navy would bring a smile to his face and go on to shape his life for years to come. Over the years, he was also a logger, power house operator, lighthouse keeper, tourist resort manager, car mechanic, electrician鈥檚 helper, and a hydro construction foreman. In his 30s he went back to school, received his aircraft maintenance engineer degree, then went on to teacher鈥檚 college. He loved teaching, and finished his career at Cecil Facer Correctional School in Sudbury. All of these jobs would take the family from Manitoulin Island to Shearwater, Nova Scotia, back to Sault Ste. Marie and Wawa, back to the Island, then Sudbury. Leland and Pat retired and moved back to Manitoulin 25 years ago. They welcomed kids, grandkids and great grandkids to their place on the south shore all year long, but especially in the summer months, hosting family events and making special memories for us all. He loved his family and we loved him. Leland, aka Lefty or Lee or Trigger, was a friendly, witty, helpful, fix-it guy that liked to hang out in his garage fixing everything from kids鈥 toys to broken toasters, lawnmowers and cars too. He was colourful and loved to recite non-sensical jingles and sayings that his grandchildren still quote word for word. 鈥淥ne more a piece and we鈥檇 be tied鈥 was often used during card games, and has been adopted by others for hockey and baseball games and the like. He loved aircraft, trucks, maple syrup on everything, raisin pie, rum & raisin ice cream, books by Douglas Reeman and Jack Higgins, fish & chips, stew and tea biscuits, homemade jam, and sipping tea on the front deck watching the waves roll in. He was a family historian, an animal whisperer, a self- proclaimed weatherman, a member of the local coffee crew at the mall, and a talented whistler. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to the Mindemoya Hospital Auxiliary or a charity of your choice.
