LITTLE CURRENT—As the story goes, when her daughter was barely two weeks old, in April of 1976, it was suggested to Debbie Heise that she might like an evening out, to get a little break. ‘How about you come to a hospital auxiliary meeting?’

“It was the AGM and officers were up for election. I came home treasurer of the auxiliary,” Ms. Heise said with a laugh, “and I’ve been a member of the auxiliary ever since.” Since her daughter just celebrated her 50th birthday…well, you do the math. That’s a lot of years dedicated to one organization.

“Lots of fond memories. Lots and lots of hours,” Ms. Heise recalled. “We used to have to do a report once a year to the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA), and part of it was keeping track of how many man hours our volunteers did for each auxiliary, and it was just mind-boggling how many hundreds of hours our small little group would accumulate every year for this small little auxiliary compared to vast, huge ones in Toronto and areas,” she said.
