The Hamrock family of Ohio recently celebrated their 80th reunion at Dawson Resort on Lake Kagawong. Since 1946, five generations have vacationed on Manitoulin, forging deep, lasting Island ties.

Hamrock family celebrate multi-generational milestone
SPRING BAY鈥擣our generations of the Hamrock family of Ohio celebrated the family鈥檚 80th Reunion on Lake Kagawong at the Dawson Resort in Spring Bay. Since the first intrepid family explorers ventured across the ferry to Manitoulin in 1946 members of the family have been vacationing on Manitoulin, most of that time at Dawson鈥檚. This week 17 members of the family made the trip. It was 30 years ago that the family celebrated its 50th reunion, a milestone recorded at the time by Island newspapers.
Family legend is that there was a two-week shutdown at the automobile factory where family members worked at the time, and they were advised to 鈥済o North and keep going鈥 to find a suitable vacation spot. It was a two-day wait for the ferry to Manitoulin Island from Tobermory in those days, as there were more folks seeking passage than the vessel could accommodate in one go.
The family fell in love with Manitoulin, spending a couple of days camping rough before finding a more permanent location at one of the resorts on the shores of Lake Kagawong. After that resort changed hands several years ago, they decamped to the Dawson Resort and have never looked back鈥攚ell, unless it is in the copious scrapbooks now maintained by Jill Camelli or in the framed photograph collection that adorns her cabin walls.
