Gore Bay鈥檚 government committee voted against allowing backyard chickens within town limits, citing concerns over space, noise, and odors, upholding the existing bylaw that prohibits domestic fowl.
GORE BAY鈥擳he general government committee for the Town of Gore Bay has voted down changing a bylaw that would allow residents to having chickens within the town residential limits.
鈥淭he municipalities on Manitoulin that have chicken bylaws in place have large areas for chickens. Gore Bay is contained in terms of the space we have in town. The dairy farm having chickens, this could be allowed because they have a lot of space,鈥 stated Gore Bay Mayor Ron Lane at the committee meeting. 鈥淚 personally do not want to have chickens or chicken coops in town. If someone has a dog in a neighbourhood (where there are chickens) they will end up barking all day. And there is a smell to having chickens around.鈥
Councillor Stephanie Steele told the meeting she felt the name of the bylaw, exotic pet bylaw, should be changed. She also indicated she would be in favour of allowing chickens in town if it is done the right way and there is a limit on the number of chickens, and certain rules are met involving minimum lot sizes and requirements for cleanliness, storage and disposal of chicken waste are met.
