The Manitoulin Trade Show which will feature more than 44 vendors and is being hosted by the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI) is taking place in Little Current for three days, beginning Friday, May 29 and continuing through Sunday, May 31 at the NEMI recreation centre. Booths will be located both inside the main ice surface and the outside parking lots of the recreation centre. There will be food vendors offering a host of culinary delights, and the main stage will feature local entertainment, demonstrations, presentations by industry experts and more. The Gore Bay Volunteer Fire Department is hosting the Manitoulin Island Volunteer Firefighter Challenge this Saturday, . The event is taking place in the Gore Bay arena. J.L. Richards representatives have provided two design options to Gore Bay council as part of a land use planning study for the town to consider for the former Woods Lane Apartments building property.

While the Manitoulin Health Centre is experiencing success in recruiting healthcare professionals to the Island, the lack of available and affordable housing is still a significant barrier to bringing these workers to Manitoulin. 

UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service held its annual general meeting this past week. The service highlighted both successes and challenges for one of the most advanced Indigenous police forces in the country.

Let the sun shine in! Early summer has arrived! The weekend promises sunshine and, except for some cloudy periods on Saturday night. Friday is expected to have a daytime high of 20°C, according to Environment Canada, dropping to 7°C overnight under clear skies.

If there were Islanders at Woodbine Race Track on Saturday, May 23 they must be sporting broad smiles—Manitoulin thoroughbred filly Hawberry won her race—paying off a whopping 18 to 1.

A cautionary tale for those travelling south on the Chi-Cheemaun ferry from South Baymouth, you might want to stop in at Carl’s Trading Post to fill up. Tobermory’s only gas station is closed—possibly for the season. The nearest gas station south is around 70 kilometres south of Tobermory, or at the Nawash Unceded Indian Reserve 80 kilometres south of Tobermory.

Shots were fired at a home just south of Little Current leading to a police chase and the apprehension of the alleged shooter. There is no ongoing public safety issue.

A group of sacred Anishinaabe items, including treaty pipes and wampum, were among the focus at the annual Treaty Week gathering in Manitowaning. The gathering, which heard talks by historians such as Dr. Alan Corbiere and Dr. Josh Manitowabi, took place at the historical signing location of two Manitoulin treaties.
