KAGAWONG—Randy Carlyle, star defenceman in the National Hockey League (NHL), winner of the Norris Memorial Trophy (emblematic for best D-man of the year 1980-1981) and coach of the Stanley Cup winning Anaheim Ducks (2007), made it clear which of his many accolades meant the most to him, at the hockey themed History Day in Kagawong celebration held recently.

“The Stanley Cup,” stated Mr. Carlyle when the question was posed by host Steve Paikin. “You are part of a team, and as a coach you set the standard for the team as a coach, being the leader of the group. But it’s the players that make the difference. If the players are buying what the coach is selling you will have success.”

Mr. Carlyle explained his Ducks team started the 2006-2007 NHL regular season, “27 (wins) three (losses). The year before we won the Cup, we had been beat out in the semi-finals by the Edmonton Oilers.” During the season Anaheim traded for star defenceman Chris Pronger.
