M'Chigeeng 91˵ hosted its 37th Annual Traditional Powwow on September 5–6 under the theme "Walking in the Direction of Our Culture with Respect," featuring traditional dancing, drumming by host drum Bear Creek, feasting, and community celebration.
M’CHIGEENG—M’Chigeeng 91˵ welcomed dancers, drummers, vendors and visitors from across the region this past weekend for its 37th Annual Traditional Powwow, held September 5 and 6 at the M’Chigeeng Powwow Grounds. This year’s theme, “Walking in the Direction of Our Culture with Respect,” was chosen by Lakeview School’s Grade 1 and 3 classes.
The powwow was blessed with great weather over the weekend, not to hot, and not at all rainy, despite some threatening forecasts.
The celebration began earlier in the week with sunrise ceremonies running from Thursday through Sunday at 6 am, alongside a sacred fire tended by community volunteers such as Steven Debassige. Festivities built through the weekend with a Princess and Brave competition and a roast beef feast on Saturday afternoon, followed by Grand Entries on Saturday at noon and 7 pm and again on Sunday at noon.
