Two young sailors, Laszlo Vernarsky and Tristan Wallace, are planning a 4-to-5-day circumnavigation of Manitoulin Island in a cramped 16-foot 1970s day sailor named "Bruno."

Young Little Current Naval Cadet Planning to Sail Around Manitoulin Island — At the tender age of 17, cadet Petty Officer Lazlo Vernarsky has already accomplished much. Now the young sailing enthusiast is heading out to circumnavigate the island.

LITTLE CURRENT—A 16-foot sailboat is being prepared by two young sailors for a trip that would be difficult even for an experienced sailor. They intend to sail around Manitoulin Island starting this weekend.

Laszlo Vernarsky, a 17-year-old Petty Officer Second (PO2) Class of Naval Cadet Corps 348, is going to be travelling with his best friend, Tristan Wallace, 18, for the four- or five-day journey. They plan to set off from Boyle Marine next Saturday or Sunday, depending on the weather, and will return there after the voyage around the Island.

Their journey will pass through a variety of waters surrounding Manitoulin Island. The northern part of the Island lies next to the North Channel of Lake Huron, a waterway about 300 kilometres long that extends from Georgian Bay to the St. Mary’s River. Easternly lies Georgian Bay, while the southern side looks out over the open waters of Lake Huron. For PO2 Vernarsky and Wallace, a major part of the difficulty consists in travelling this distance in such a small boat.
