It is with heavy hearts that the family of Douglas ‘Doug’ Alexander Smith announces his peaceful passing on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the age of 93, with his family by his side. Born and raised in Gore Bay, Ontario, on beautiful Manitoulin Island, Doug remained deeply connected to his hometown throughout his life, never wavering in his commitment to its people, its future and the prosperity of Manitoulin Island. Doug’s early years were filled with music, hard work and adventure. He grew up playing instruments, racing boats and working in the family wholesale business. After high school, he spent time in Toronto working as an auditor with the Bank of Montreal before being summoned home to Manitoulin Island to work as a truck driver and warehouseman in the family business. Few things brought Doug greater pride than the family business. After his parents sold the wholesale business, Doug founded Manitoulin Transport in 1960. Under Doug’s leadership, it grew from very humble beginnings into one of Canada’s largest and most respected privately owned transportation companies. He believed that success is built on dedication and hard work, and those principles shaped both the company and the legacy he leaves behind. Despite the company’s remarkable growth, Doug never lost sight of what mattered most: dedicated staff, loyal customers, and strong partners who became part of the Manitoulin Transport family. As the business flourished, Doug devoted increasing time and energy to giving back. Beyond business, he was a tireless champion for Gore Bay, Manitoulin Island and Northern Ontario. He believed deeply in strengthening his community, supporting local initiatives and quietly helping people in need. His extraordinary generosity and lifelong commitment to philanthropy were recognized nationally when he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2008. Travelling to Ottawa to receive the honour was a proud moment, but those who knew Doug understood that the true reward for him was seeing his community thrive. He also received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, along with numerous other honours recognizing his outstanding leadership, generosity, and service. Music was woven into every chapter of Doug’s life. A gifted natural musician, he knew nearly a thousand songs by ear and could play several instruments, although the clarinet remained his lifelong favourite. Dixieland jazz was his passion! Doug began playing with the Gore Bay Orchestra in 1947 and continued performing for nearly eight decades, taking the stage just one week before his passing during the Harbour Days celebration in Gore Bay. Whether entertaining at community dances, local events or gatherings with friends, music brought him immense joy and created lifelong friendships. In 1960, Doug married Phyllis Eadie of Little Current, beginning a loving partnership that lasted 57 years until her passing in 2017. Together they enjoyed boating throughout the North Channel and Northern Michigan, travelling to the Caribbean where Doug loved to snorkel and attending dances in halls all over Manitoulin Island, where Doug often performed with the orchestra. Their home was always open to family and friends, and gatherings frequently ended with music, laughter and singing that carried late into the night – and sometimes into the morning! Whether in a boardroom, on a stage or around the kitchen table with family and friends, Doug’s sharp mind, wonderfully dry sense of humour and gentle nature made people feel welcome, valued and inspired. He left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was a lifelong napper with a notorious sweet tooth and an animal lover who found as much (or more!) joy in life’s simple pleasures as he did in his greatest accomplishments. Doug is lovingly remembered by his sons Gord (Beth Marie) and Jeffrey (Jillian) his grandchildren Mariah, Samantha (Matt), Deanna, Emma and Brianna his great grandchildren Anthony, Melina, Sophia and Romi and his very special friend and bandmate Nickie Hinds, who brought our father tremendous joy in his later years. He will also be deeply missed by his extended family, countless friends, colleagues and all whose lives were enriched by knowing him. Doug was predeceased by his parents Bill and Reta Smith his sister Josephine (Andy) Griffith his infant granddaughter Elizabeth Smith and his wife Phyllis Smith. Doug’s legacy lives on not only through his loved ones and the company he built, but also through the communities he strengthened, the music he shared and the countless lives he touched with his kindness, mentorship and unwavering commitment to making places and people around him better than how he found them.  The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the healthcare professionals, friends and loved ones who provided care, comfort and support during Doug’s final days. A celebration of Doug’s remarkable life will be held on September 12, 2026, with details forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour Doug’s memory are invited to support organizations that strengthen communities and help people in need – values that guided his life and reflected the generosity he showed every day.
