Folks in Wiikwemkoong are invited to have coffee with a Wikwemikong Tribal Police Services officer today from 1:30-2:30 pm at Ed’s Family Restaurant.

Photographer/publisher Mark Zelinski is a multidisciplinary artist whose career spans five decades and over countries. He is widely recognized for his “Books That Heal” initiative through which he has donated 9,000 photography books to 140 charities worldwide. The Manitoulin Island launch of his 10th book, “Niagara Escarpment: Land Between Waters” is taking place . A final exhibition and sale celebrating the landscapes, light and peaceful beauty of the North that iconic Manitoulin artist Ivan Wheale so generously shared with us all, is being hosted at Perivale Gallery. For more information see advertisement on Page 13 of this week’s edition.

The fifth annual Island Pork Roast will take place Saturday, May 16, with lunch served from 11 am to 1 pm. Leave a donation for Amish Parochial School. A bake sale will begin at 10 am, and quilt sale starts at 1:30 pm sharp. An auction of donated items will start at 1 pm. The event will take place at the farm of Lloyd and Clara Albrecht, 15 McKechnie Road, Tehkummah. . Bike registration will take place between 8 am-9 am at the Meldrum Bay community hall. The ride will start at 10 am. Door prizes will be drawn, and ticket holders must be present to collect. To join the ride, the price is $40 per person, which includes the guided ATV ride and lunch (lunch only is $15. Proceeds raised from the event will go to the Dawson Citizen’s Improvement Association. What we are working on

Two Manitoulin Island musicians have both been nominated for multiple awards at the Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards to be held next month.

Billings and Tehkummah townships had declared respective states of emergency over after the significant floods in April. However, in Billings the Bridal Veil Falls will remain closed until the township gets a clear idea of the damage that was caused by the flooding.

The Rainbow District School Board honoured employees, community partners and volunteers with the presentation of the board awards earlier this week.

It’s going to be a mixed bag when it comes to this weekend’s weather according to Environment Canada’s predictions. Friday is expecting a daytime high of 13°C— accompanied a mix of sun and cloud. The night might get a bit soggy, with a 40 percent chance of showers with a low of 8°C.

A 40 percent chance of showers continues during the day on Saturday with the daytime high of 22°C dropping to 5°C overnight under clear skies.

Sunday will live up to its name, as it is predicted to be sunny throughout the day, with a more seasonal daytime high of 17°C dropping to 9°C overnight with cloudy periods.

Victoria Day Monday will be a balmy 24°C with a 40 percent chance of showers.

The Little Current Independent Grocer has changed hands leading to several unfounded rumours swirling around the Island that expanded to include the grocery store in Gore Bay and the Subway in Little Current. According to Loblaws, the store in Gore Bay is still under the same management and it is clear the Subway in Little Current is unconnected to the change in ownership in Little Current.

The dialysis unit at Manitoulin Health Centre, Little Current site, is seeking donations! As a way to brighten patients’ treatment experiences, the dialysis unit is hosting bingos with their patients and are seeking prizes from the community.
