SAULT STE. MARIE—Island seasonal resident Drew Bannister, who will be returning to coach the Soo Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) this upcoming season, has also been named to the Canada National Junior hockey team coaching staff for the 2027 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior championship.

Hockey Canada announced on July 20 the coaching and support staff that will work with Canada’s National Junior Team. The World Junior championships are being held in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, this winter.

“Head coach Misha Donskov (London, Ontario) will be joined by assistant coaches Drew Bannister (Belleville, Ontario, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Hockey League), Brad Lauer, (Humboldt, Saskatchewan/Spokane Western Hockey League), Jim Hulton (Wolfe Island, Ontario/Saint John, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League), and Ryan Getzlaf, (Regina, Saskatchewan, goaltending coach Dan De Palma (Kamloops, BC/Kamloops, WHL), and video coach Adam Filmon (Winnipeg, Manitoba) with additional support from James Emery (Calgary, Alberta) Hockey Canada’s director of performance analysis.
